Chattanooga, Tennessee –Â Drivers in Tennessee should prepare for traffic changes on State Route 60 North as utility work is scheduled to begin next week, bringing a temporary lane closure that will remain in place for several days.
According to transportation officials, contract crews will start work on Monday, July 20, 2026, at 8 a.m. Eastern Time. The project will require the right lane of SR 60 North at the Peerless Road intersection to be closed while crews complete utility-related work.
The lane closure is expected to stay in effect until Monday, July 27, 2026, at 6 p.m. Eastern Time.
Drivers urged to slow down and plan ahead
Motorists traveling through the area during the construction period should expect slower traffic and changing driving conditions. Officials warned that lane restrictions, lower speeds, and construction workers operating equipment near the roadway are likely throughout the project.
Drivers are encouraged to remain alert while passing through the work zone and to allow additional travel time in case traffic becomes backed up.
Transportation officials also reminded motorists to check current road conditions before leaving home by using TDOT’s motorist information tools. Travelers can monitor traffic through the TDOT SmartWay Map or call 511 for the latest statewide travel information.
Officials also stressed the importance of avoiding distractions behind the wheel. Drivers are reminded not to tweet, text, or talk on the phone while operating a vehicle, especially when approaching construction zones where workers are present.
In addition, motorists are urged to follow Tennessee’s Move Over Law, which requires drivers to move over whenever possible for highway workers and emergency vehicles. Violating the law can lead to penalties of up to 30 days in jail and fines of up to $500.
Transportation officials hope drivers will stay patient, reduce their speed, and use extra caution throughout the weeklong project to help protect both road crews and everyone traveling through the work zone.
