Nashville, Tennessee – In a proactive measure to ensure public safety during the New Year’s Eve celebrations, Traffic Division officers, funded by a grant from the Tennessee Highway Safety Office, will collaborate with Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) troopers to set up a sobriety checkpoint. This checkpoint, scheduled for Sunday evening, December 31st, will be situated on West End Avenue, a strategic location chosen to monitor and manage festive activities that often involve alcohol consumption.
This initiative comes in response to concerning statistics from Davidson County in 2023, where alcohol-related crashes have been alarmingly high. The county has witnessed 1,272 such crashes, leading to 836 injuries and, tragically, 37 fatalities. These numbers underscore the importance of stringent measures to curb drunk driving.
The sobriety checkpoint is a crucial part of the “Booze It & Lose It” campaign, which aims to discourage drinking and driving, not just during the holiday season but throughout the year. This campaign serves as a reminder of the severe consequences that can arise from impaired driving, both legally and in terms of public safety. By implementing these checkpoints, authorities hope to significantly reduce the incidence of alcohol-related accidents and fatalities, ensuring a safer environment for everyone during the festive period.
