Hendersonville, Tennessee – The Rockland Recreation Area in Hendersonville is facing a prolonged closure due to significant damage caused by an EF-3 tornado. The devastating storm, which struck the area on December 9, 2023, has necessitated extensive recovery efforts that will span several months.
Extensive Damage and Restoration Plans
Freddie Bell, Operations Project Manager, provided an overview of the damage and the extensive efforts required for restoration. He revealed that 80% of the area was directly hit by the tornado, resulting in the destruction of 50% of the area’s trees. The intensity of the storm was such that two shelters were completely lost, and another one was severely damaged.
Bell described the aftermath as a “massive debris field” requiring significant cleanup and restoration work. The damage extends to various aspects of the recreation area, including tree salvage, landscaping, and infrastructure. Essential amenities like trash cans, grills, sidewalks, and picnic tables are all part of a “holistic rebuild” plan for the recreation area.
The Corps of Engineers is actively working on a plan to reopen the boat ramp by late February or early March. However, the full restoration and reopening of the entire area will take several more months. This process includes funding and awarding contracts to carry out the extensive rebuilding and restoration work needed.
Bell acknowledged the Rockland Recreation Area’s significance to the community, stating, “We recognize that Rockland is a highly visited, [and] that the community is passionate about its use.” He emphasized that the severity of the damage makes it impossible to reopen the area until it is completely cleared and restored.
Given the uncertainty surrounding the total cost and timeline for the park’s reopening, the field staff is adjusting to the situation. They are committed to assisting the public in finding alternative parks in the area during the closure of Rockland Recreation Area.
The closure of Rockland Recreation Area underscores the devastating impact of natural disasters and the challenges in recovery and restoration. As the community eagerly awaits the park’s reopening, the efforts to restore this cherished recreational spot highlight the resilience and dedication of the operations team in the face of adversity.
