In 2007, YNDA EVJEN and a group of entrepreneurial locals launched a unique Gingerbread competition as part of the Sumner County (SC) Christmas Parade. This initiative evolved into the widely celebrated HolidayFest, which, over the years, has impressively contributed $3.9 million to local charities. This festival, spanning from July to February, not only boosts the local economy but also brings together more than 25,000 residents for affordable, family-oriented festivities.
Evjen said, “HolidayFest connects people, businesses, government, and service organizations. Our activities have two primary benefits: to monetarily help worthy nonprofit causes while bringing substantial business and tourism dollars to the community. HolidayFest does this by attracting thousands of visitors to celebrate the spirit of the season.”
The 18-member board of HolidayFest, featuring honorary chairs and five executives, has collaborated with 250 charities over 18 years to support and raise awareness for community needs. In 2022, they gathered $158,000, and with over 15 events planned, this year promises even greater impact. These events aid local food banks, supporting over 5,000 families. Beneficiaries this year include Community Child Care Services Inc., Mary’s Magical Place, Live. Love. Nashville, and others like the senior citizens center and the Gallatin Shalom Zone.
This season’s highlight is the “Sleigh Bells Ring” themed Christmas parade, led by grand marshal William Michael Morgan, a renowned country singer, and emceed by Holly Thompson. Morgan’s achievements include a No. 2 hit on the Country Airplay chart and multiple Grand Ole Opry performances. Past marshals feature notables like Charlene Tilton and Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. Honorary chairs since 2006 have been stars like Kelly Lang and Ricky Scaggs.
The celebrations commence with October’s Gentlemen’s Committee Poker and wrap up with February’s Monte Carlo Night at the Hendersonville Senior Center. Other fundraisers, like Pig Fest, have drawn 15,000 attendees and benefited various local nonprofits. November’s Sparkle Noel Dinner and Fashion Show raised funds for The Care Cabinet, and the Monthaven Art and Cultural Center hosted its annual Christmas Tree Elegance event.
Community Child Care Services’ Breakfast with Santa at the Bluegrass Yacht and Country Club was another highlight, where guests brought gifts for foster children and underprivileged kids received free tickets. Fogbee’s Santa Bike Brigade also contributed toys to foster care children.
“HolidayFest is important to our community and does so much for charities. We support and honor the efforts they all make to help our county be a wonderful place during the holidays,” said former County Executive Anthony Holt.
